5 Wisdoms (a Bee taught me) to Attain Goals

snail-83672_1280This afternoon the patio door was open and in flew a bee. It swooped through the living room and landed against the huge glass window a few feet from the open door. Through the glass, he saw his home and was determined to get there.

He flew with all his might but kept hitting a force field. He didn’t understand. He could see the trees blowing in the wind. His world was right there and yet he couldn’t get to it. He made up his mind to try harder. That’s what was taught in bee school. His body buzzed until he was frantic and frazzled. Five minutes. Ten minutes. Twenty. He must get home!

A little snail was watching this ordeal from her perch on a houseplant. The open door was only a foot away and yet the bee insisted on trying to break through the glass.

“Come on little bee, you have to have a little brain in your head. It’s obviously not working. Try something else.”

The snail had heard that “the only way out is through,” but maybe “through” needn’t be defined as a straight line. Going through a maze implied lots of twists and turns and even some backtracking.

The snail watched as the bee repeatedly threw himself against the glass because what he wanted was on the other side. If he took a moment to reevaluate, he might realize that what he was doing wasn’t getting the result he wanted.

The bee was living under an old maxim: If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

The snail wondered – could there be a better way?

Yes she thought,
“If at first we don’t succeed, we can reevaluate and create a different plan.”

Einstein said that insanity is repeating the same thing and expecting a different result. How often have we smashed ourselves into the glass windows of our goals because we thought that trying harder would yield something different?

Let’s play smarter. Like the bee, we may not see that the best way to our goal could be the path behind us, or to the side, or the big open door to the right.

On the way to our goals let’s remember the 5 Wisdoms from the Bee:

1) Play smart

2) Reevaluate

3) Devise new plans when needed

4) Be creative

5) Be open to alternate paths

What goal in your life is causing you to buzz frantically at a glass window? What are some other ways you could get there?

Love this! Did you come up with the bee and the snail analogy yourself? For me, I think my main challenge is sticking with something long enough to see whether I’m actually banging my head against the glass, or whether I just haven’t given it enough time yet. I liked the reflection moment I had of, “Where am I doing this in my life right now?”

Thank you! Yes, I did come up with the bee and the snail analogy. The bee flew into my living room while I was giving a massage (it was attracted to the orange oil i had). I watched it for 20 minutes get completely frazzled when the door was literally 1 foot away. It was thought provoking. I started the post with a snail analogy that didn’t work so I became the snail instead. :) Ooh today i was listening to something on MarieTv about how it’s good to give yourself time to dabble because that’s where fun and creativity can build from. I get that, though, about sticking with something. I’ve been sticking with things because i’ve thought that’s “how i need to do them” when this bee reminded me that there are other creative ways to get the same end result, not just what everybody else is doing. I think your newest idea is one of the brilliant ones that “found the door.” Love. :)
